Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are surgeries traditionally associated with significant pain, bleeding risk, and prolonged recovery. Newer techniques, including coblation intracapsular tonsillectomy, can reduce the risks, pain, and recovery time associated with this procedure, but not all ENT surgeons are trained in this technique. Dr. Walker has been performing intracapsular tonsillectomies for 10+ years and is one of the leaders in this field, having lectured on this topic and trained many others on this revolutionary technique.
What is the difference between intracapsular tonsillectomy and other surgical techniques?
The tonsils are encapsulated structures located in the back of the throat and rest along the superior constrictor muscle. Traditional techniques have focused on removing the tonsil and its capsule, which exposes the underlying muscle bed. Blood vessels and pain fibers are abundant in this muscle bed, creating a relatively higher risk of bleeding, more significant pain, and longer recovery times. During intracapsular tonsillectomy, Dr. Walker is able to remove the tonsils while sparing the tonsillar capsule and thereby protecting the underlying muscle bed. This results in less pain, lower bleeding risks, and shorter recovery times.
